Recently, the team led byProfessor QingyuGuan from the college of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou university published twonew research results“Source apportionment of heavy metals in farmland soil of Wuwei, China: Comparison of three receptor models” and “Transport pathways of PM10during the spring in northwest China and its characteristics of potential dust sources” in theJournal of Cleaner Production. The two articles were both signed by the college of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University, and the research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (41671188).
Under the background of China's rapid economic development, the situation of soil heavy metal pollution and air pollution is more serious and has posed a serious threat to food security and human living environment. The ecological environment in northwest China is particularly fragile, so it is meaningful to study soil pollution in this area. The study “Source apportionment of heavy metals in farmland soil of Wuwei, China: Comparison of three receptor models”shows that agricultural activity is the most importantanthropogenic sources of heavy metals in Wuwei soil, followed byfossil fuel.To guarantee the quality of agricultural products, special attention should be paid to the use of fertilizers and pesticides related to agricultural activities and the control ofindustrial pollutants in the region.
PM10 is a major air pollutant in China due to its significant impact on visibility, climate radiation balance and human health. In northwest China, especially in spring, the sand-dust weatheris easy to form due to the exposed ground and the strong winds, resulting in a significant increase pf PM10concentration. Therefore, PM10pollution control is urgent, and pollution source identification and characteristic analysis is an important measure to achieve environmental management. The study “Transport pathways of PM10during the spring in northwest China and its characteristics of potential dust sources”shows that the northwest path, the western and northern path are the mainPM10transportation channels in springin northwest China.Correspondingly, there are three main PM10sources, which arethree source regionswith differentcontributionsto PM10pollution in China.
