On April 13, 2021, Zhang Xiaoye, academician of China Academy of Meteorological Sciences, gave a lecture on "Introduction to climate change science" to our graduate students.

The theme of this course is the causes of climate change and how aerosols and clouds play a role in the human driving factors of climate change. The course contents are mainly divided into four parts:1. Why climate changes; 2. Why does climate change research pay special attention to aerosols and clouds; 3. The progress of research on the climate effects of aerosols and clouds; 4. The relationship between aerosol - cloud and the increasingly serious fog - haze pollution in China. According to academician Zhang Xiaoye, aerosols are colloidal dispersion systems formed by solid or liquid fine particles dispersing and suspending in the gas medium. The clouds, fog and dust in the atmosphere, the smoke formed by the unburned fuel in the boilers and engines used in industry and transportation, the solid dust formed by the grinding materials and grain processing in mining and quarries, the artificial smoke screen and toxic smoke are all concrete examples of aerosols. Therefore, the study of aerosols and clouds is of great significance for the study of climate patterns. The expression of aerosol on the climate change process varies with different climate patterns, the climate effect of aerosols cannot be well simulated by process simulation.Globally,20% - 40% aerosol optical thickness and 1/4 - 2/3 of cloud condensation nodule concentration are believed to come from human sources, indicating that human activities have a more obvious impact on climate change. For China, the main reason for the pollution is the excessive use of non-clean energy, which is represented by coal. The aerosol concentration in China is a little bit high in the world, but lower than that in the South Asian urban agglomeration. Air pollution is a problem that must be overcome in the process of a country's development, and the research on aerosol will contribute to the development of our country.

Finally, academician Zhang Xiaoye introduced the IPCC report and their team's research results to our students, and encouraged students to study climate knowledge hard.Academician Zhang's wonderful and vivid teaching aroused the atmosphere of the classroom, the students thought actively and discussed warmly. At the end of the class, the students raised their hands one after another and put forward wonderful questions, showing our students’ diligence in thinking.

After the course, the students expressed their thanks to academician Zhang Xiaoye with warm applause. This course has laid a solid foundation for everyone's knowledge of climate and benefited them a lot.
