On June 8, 2021, Professor Jiang Kejuan of the Institution of Energy Research, National Development and Reform Commission, gave a lecture on "Introduction to climate change science" to our postgraduate students.

The course takes "Adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development of the climate change" as the theme, which is divided into four parts: 1. proposal of adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development; 2. synergy of adaptation and mitigation; 3. measures of adaptation and mitigation; 4. adaptation and mitigation in the framework of sustainable development. According to Prof. Jiang Kejuan, in 1992, the UN climate change framework decided to introduce two different strategies to deal with climate change: climate change adaptation and mitigation. Climate adaptation is based on the fact that climate change has taken place, and it is inevitable for all societies to experience it. Therefore, it is necessary for all countries to enhance their own capabilities to better adapt to this change, so as to reduce the loss and impact of climate change on life, property and health. Mitigation of climate change refers to taking measures to slow down and reduce the rate and amplitude of global temperature rise. Prof. Jiang Kejuan clarified these concepts by quoting past climate events, such as high temperature in Paris, rainstorm in Beijing, etc., and extended them from past climate events to the prediction of future climate change, so that students here can more deeply feel the impact of climate change on their lives. Prof. Jiang Kejuan said that with the improvement of the level of social and economic development and the frequent occurrence of extreme climate events, the significance of coping with climate change for ensuring the sustainable development of economy and society, safeguarding the vital interests of the people and the fundamental interests of the country has become more and more prominent. It is realistic and urgent to adapt to climate change, especially dealing with extreme climate events. Adapting to climate change is the inevitable requirement of sustainable development, and continuously enhancing the ability to adapt to climate change is the strategic task of sustainable development.

At the end of the class, Prof. Jiang Kejuan arranged several thinking questions and encouraged students to actively ask questions, be diligent in thinking and questioning, and strive to explore the vast scientific world. As for the questions raised by Prof. Jiang Kejuan, the students actively thought and discussed them.

Prof. Jiang Kejuanwas the director of the Institution of Energy Research, National Development and Reform Commission from 2000 to 2010. He began to study climate change related to energy policy analysis in 1993, focusing on energy technology policy evaluation, energy supply policy evaluation, new energy development and energy conservation. He is the main author of the third to sixth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPCC). His main research interests include energy and emissions prospects, energy and fuel tax assessment, China's potential to achieve energy targets, and the development of comprehensive policy assessment models. He was selected into the national "Million Talents Project" and was awarded the special allowance by the State Council.
