Lecturer profile

Professor Tang Guoan is a member of the Jiangsu Provincial CPPCC, a member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the China Democratic League. Currently, he is the incumbent director of the Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Science of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing Normal University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Physical Geography, a master's degree in Cartography and Remote Sensing from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in Geographic Information Sciences from the University of Salzburg, Austria in 1998.

Prof. Tang mainly engaged in research including basic theories and methods of Geographic Information Sciences, digital terrain analysis, and eroded landforms. He has presided over 8 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 4 national 863 programs (National High-tech R&D Program of China) and several key Construction Projects of National Teaching Quality. The subject "Geographic Information System" taught by him has won many national honorary titles, and was one of the first selected projects of the "golden course construction platform promotion plan for Chinese universities". He has edited two textbooks for the “12th five-year plan” and won two national teaching achievement awards. He was awarded a national teaching master in 2009, the national “Ten Thousand People Program” leading talent (teaching master) in 2014 and the title of “National Model Teacher” in 2019.
