The 2019 National Geomorphology and Quaternary Academic Conference was held at Lanzhou University on August 25-27th. Theconferencewas hosted by the Geomorphology and Quaternary Professional Committee, the Geographical Society of China and organized by the College of Earth and Environmental Sciencesand the key Laboratory of Western China’s Environmental Systems (Ministry of Education), Lanzhou University. More than 260 experts, scholars and graduate students from 68 universities and research institutes attended the conference. The conference received 126 abstracts of articles covering various fields in the geomorphology and Quaternary including 14 aspects.

OnAugust 26th, at the opening ceremony, Professor Baotian Pan, Vice President of Lanzhou University, Professor Zhibao Dong, Vice President of Shaanxi Normal University, Professor JijunLi from Lanzhou University, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and JuhuaXiong, Deputy Director of the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, successively published Speaking.

After the opening ceremony, ProfessorBojie Fu, Vice Chairman of the International Geographical Union and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to make a report on “The Frontier of Surface Process Research”. Subsequently, ProfessorLipingZhou from Peking University, Professor Xiaomin Fang from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor HuayuLu from Nanjing University, Professor ZhibaoDong from Shaanxi Normal University, and ProfessorJunshengNie from Lanzhou University respectively gave a report on the conference, showing the latest researchesin the field of geomorphology and quaternary at home and abroad.

On theAugust27th, thedelegates discussed and exchanged ideas on the geomorphic evolution and the Quaternary environmental changes, the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, the relationship among weathering, erosion and environmental changes, new methods and technologies in geomorphology research in the fivesub-meetings. A total of 120 representatives made oral presentations, deepening the understanding of surface processes, geomorphic evolution and environmental change.

During the conference, the Yellow River terraces, the loess stratum and the Cenozoic sediments were surveyed in the Lanzhou Basin. After the conference, on August 28th to 29th, the research team led by Associate Professor ShengliYang including 24 participants went to the Linxia Basin to study the typical geomorphology of the Cenozoic sedimentary strata, the planation surface, and the Daxia River terraces. Meanwhile, on the 28th to 30th, Professor HongshanGao led the other research team including 46 representatives to attend a three-day field trip along Lanzhou-Xining-Menyuan-Zhangyu-Wuwei-Lanzhou. Typical geomorphology including Huangshui River terraces, lakeshore terraces, colored hills and deserts, as well as a rich human landscape, can be seen along the way.

The conference was held successfully in an active atmosphere, which promoted scientific exchangeon Geomorphology and Quaternary and provided a good academic platform for the Quaternary research peers, especially young researchers and students.
