Reporter Profile:Professor Chen Zhongyuan is a tenured professor at East China Normal University and the editor-in-chief of the journal Geomorphology. He has long been engaged in research on the geological and geomorphological evolution of basins and river deltas, the origin of early agricultural civilizations, climate and sea-level reconstruction, and the impact of dam construction on the flux of materials into the sea. He currently serves as a member of the International EMECS Scientific Committee and leads international collaborative projects comparing the Yangtze and Nile deltas funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Science and Technology. He has held important positions such as China's national representative to the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) and a scientific committee member of the International Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) project. Professor Chen is also the chief scientist for the strategic cooperation project on large river deltas under the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and the Chinese principal investigator for multiple EU Framework Programme 7, China-Egypt, China-Australia, China-UK, and China-Japan international cooperation projects. He has published over 200 research papers in international core journals, including Nature, Geology, and PNAS, and has delivered invited talks at numerous international academic conferences such as EMECS and ECSA. He has edited 10 special issues on basin-delta topics, with his work widely cited by peers both domestically and internationally.
